Balancing Act Productions, Inc. has been Debbie Lessin’s creative business outlet since 1997. From her Life is a Balancing Act Workshops to Life is a Balance Act…a fun book to the Life is a Balancing Act Blog (currently on hiatus), Debbie’s creative passion has been rekindled in many ways over the years.
Debbie has always proclaimed that she has the brains of an accountant and the soul of an artist! In fact, this tag line is on her CPA business card. Physical artistic activities were a distant memory from Debbie’s teenage/early adult years. There were the beaded necklaces she sold on Brady Street in Milwaukee. And the hats & scarves that she used to knit on oversize knitting needles and sell at the beauty salon her mother frequented. The last crafting project that Debbie remembers is the red & black needlepoint – “CPA – Accurate, Neat, and Legible”, completed in 1976 – the year that Debbie passed the CPA exam! It still proudly hangs on a wall in her CPA office even today. But alas, crafting projects took a back seat to other interests and life adventures over the year.
Until the summer of 2011 when Debbie admired the amazingly wonderful silk designed by her work neighbor Lee Allison. Lee is kind of a big deal in the local Chicago fashion scene. He mostly designs ties under his own label but also does a lot of custom work for the likes of the Lyric Opera and various corporations like Northwestern Mutual and Miller Beer. The silk is woven at a 300-year-old family-owned silk mill in England, the same mill that was asked by the Royal Family to weave the silk used for Lady Diana’s wedding dress.
And doing what Debbie does best, she took her creative endeavor and turned it into a new business – Balance Lady Designs. That’s just who Debbie is! From researching the designs, sources for findings, display, packaging and marketing, Debbie’s entrepreneurial spirit is on overdrive yet once again!
Balance Lady Designs are sold at boutiques in Chicago, Wisconsin and New York. Debbie is always looking for new stores to sell her Balance Lady Designs accessories. A small selection is also sold online at etsy.com. Balance Lady Designs are so one of a kind, limited edition that the best place to see everything is at the Art & Craft shows Debbie does each year. You can also email us to schedule an appointment for a private showing.
